Star Grading

With the fast developments happening in Southern Africa, these vibrant countries are becoming even more popular destinations for international and local tourism. This has given incentive for the rise of holiday establishments to open doors. It is therefore of high importance that each and every upstanding venue gets graded by the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa, which is the only government mandated and industry supported quality assurance authority in South Africa.

The Tourism Grading Council uses the star system to indicate the quality of accommodation offers. The amount of stars, equate with quality and value for money. Apart from ensuring potential guests quality of the venue, the establishments are immediately seen as being part of a legitimate and credible organisation. This offers substantial consumer confidence.

Star-graded accommodation is available throughout Southern Africa, from the sweeping Amatola Mountains in the Eastern Cape to the Lowveld of the Kruger National Park. There are many benefits to having an establishment star graded and visiting a star graded destination. It will tell you what facilities you can expect to find at your chosen accommodation or venue as well as prevent unnecessary surprises for the guest and owner. Other benefits will include listings with tour operators, publicity, and support and promotion from South African Tourism.

Stars

The Tourism Grading Council of South Africa has secured the exclusive use of the "star" symbol to denote standards in the Tourism Industry. Establishments will be assessed and given a "star" rating. Brief descriptions of what each star level represents can be viewed for serviced and self-catering accommodation.

Accommodation (Hotel / B&B, Guest House, Lodge, Country Houses)

Fair to good (acceptable/modest) quality in the overall standard of furnishings, service and guest care. Clean, comfortable and functional accommodation. 2 star -Good quality in the overall standard of furnishings, service and guest care. 3 star-Very good quality in the overall standard of furnishings, service and guest care. 4 star-Superior (excellent) comfort and quality with a high standard of furnishings, service and guest care. 5 star-Exceptional quality and luxurious accommodation (matching best international standards).
