Safaris
Africa is most famous for its safaris and as the best parks and game reserves are to be found on the southern section of the continent safari tours are logical holiday choices.
Kenya is one of the most popular destinations for safari tours, especially since it hosts the annual wildebeest migration across the Serengeti. South African, Zimbabwean and Botswanan safaris provide ample opportunity to see the Big 5.
But safaris don’t necessarily have to involve open canopy 4x4s and big animals.
Africa also has plenty of fishing safari opportunities. Fishing safaris are available on the Zambezi, the third longest river in Africa, as well as Lake Malawi.
Alternative tours
There is more to Africa than various safaris as city tours will show. Many of the major cities dotted across southern Africa have a rich cultural history and you would do well to sign up for tours of city centres, museums, galleries and historical monuments.
You can venture out the cities and tour some of the famous natural landmarks or industries. For instance, in South Africa you can go on wine tours in the Western Cape Winelands, and in Malawi you can tour working tea and sugar estates.
Trains are a great way to cross great distances while enjoying stopovers to explore towns and villages and meet locals. Train tours are available in many African countries, including South Africa and Zimbabwe.
The many forests in southern Africa provide ample opportunity for canopy or tree-top tours. Canopy tours give you a unique experience of forest life as you travel from branch to branch high above the forest floor. Canopy tours are available in South Africa, the DRC and Madagascar.
The many mountain ranges in southern Africa also provide an assortment of mountain climbing and hiking tours. For instance, you can arrange for a tour up Mount Kilimanjaro.
The best of both
It’s not necessary for you to choose between safaris and other tours when you go on an African holiday. Many tour operators combine safaris with other activities and attractions, such as mountain climbing, scuba diving and, if you’re in South Africa, wine tasting.
