The best golf courses in Africa
There are many countries in Africa that have world class golf courses. South Africa probably has the richest golfing history, but golf doesn’t begin and end there. Here, in no particular order, are some other fine golf courses on the great continent.
Zambia: Ndola Golf Course
Ndola Golf Club has hosted golf professionals from South Africa’s Sunshine Tour, so you know that it’s not scruffy greens and half-hearted holes. The course is of championship standard and the club house has enough facilities to keep even the fussiest golfer happy. There are three bars, a restaurant and an open patio.
Swaziland: Royal Swazi Spa ValleyThe Royal Swazi Spa Valley is a resort complex that contains a casino, spa, three hotels and ample sporting opportunities, including a championship golf course. The first nine holes offer beautiful, but relatively flat Swazi scenery; it’s the back nine where it gets really interesting with mountainous terrain. There is a country club and a pro shop to see to your leisure and shopping needs.
Namibia: Windhoek Golf and Country Club
The golf course has a rating of 72 for men and women while the club house has been designed to blend with the local scenery. Namibia is a dry country, but its golf course is lush. The course forms part of the Windhoek Country Club Hotel & Resort, so you can finish your 18 (or 19) holes and then head to your hotel for a shower and a night of gambling.
Kenya: Muthaiga Golf Club
The course has a colonial history stretching back to the 1920s, but since its early days has evolved to be inclusive while retaining its air of exclusivity. It hosts the annual Kenya Open Golf tournament and has hosted golfing greats like Ian Woosnam, Sevi Ballesteros, David Jones and Bobbly Locke. It boasts a beautiful single storey club house, putting and chipping greens and several lounges for members and non-members.
Botswana: Phakalane Golf Estate Hotel Resort Phakelane Golf Estate is an international championship standard golf course with a driving range, the larges pro shop in the country and club house that exudes elegance and comfort. The golf course was designed by the DDV Design Group. There is a halfway house that doubles as a deli, a wine cellar, conference centre, lakeside gazebo and excellent restaurant.
